Adventure Service Tourism, Where Adventure Meets Voluntourism

Adventure Service Tourism, Women In DevelopmentWomen In Development

The community of Yarina has an organized women's group that is looking for dedicated volunteers to help them in their development activities. A significant accomplishment in a predominantly male-oriented “macho” society, the theme of gender equality is at the fore-front of this community. The focus of the group is split between two areas:

  1. Reforestation of Aguaje Palm trees.
  2. Maintain a medicinal plant garden.

The activities with Aguaje are outlined in the palm tree conservation section. Recently the group started the construction of nursery beds to house the Aguaje saplings before transplant. Working with these nursery beds provides opportunities for volunteer involvement. The medicinal plant garden is a working demonstration of the healing properties of plants found in the rainforest. The women are extremely knowledgeable and willing to share their know-how while learning from visiting volunteers. Intercultural exchange and dialogue surrounding traditional medicinal techniques and plant properties is inevitable as a volunteer in this program.
